At 30 minutes from Ikebukuro, you can find a little town named Kawagoe, commonly referred as "Little Edo" for its old castle town remains (Edo being Tokyo's former name during the Tokugawa shogunate from 1603 to 1868). Kawagoe is a nice destination for a day trip from Tokyo, if you'd like to see some old Japanese architecture without traveling as far as Kyoto, Takayama, Kanazawa...
